Habitat

They are found in woodlands and clearings.

Description

They have tiny, white, star-shaped flowers that are in a thick bunch at the top of the plant. There are 2-3 long, ribbed leaves on the stem below the blossoms. The stem has a zig-zag shape where the leaves attach. They can carpet the forest floor. They bloom May through June. Also called, wild lily-of-the-valley.

Taxonomic Features (Traits) for Identification

  • Flower Type: Flowers too small to see in fluffy spike on top (raceme)

  •  Flower Color: white

  • Leaf Arrangement: Alternate
  • Plant Type: Wildflower (Small - 2-6 inches)

  • Leaf Type: Heart-shaped at base, entire (smooth edge) and clasping stem
